21/12/12 Is known as the end of the world because: It's the start of the 13th Baktun on a Mayan calender. They describe a dramatic change of some sort. Not necissarily the end of the world. EDEN in binary code has 20 0's and 12 1's All of the planets will align on the day, apparently concentrating a large mass of energy on Earth, therefor destroying it. It's different this time because there are no apocalyptic predictions that follow 2012. And this is based on the knowledge of the Maya mainly. They were a super advanced culture of mathematicians, and have been known to predict many historical events correctly. Such as the World Wars; they were NEVER wrong.

Finally, someone else who has some Mayan knowledge! I've been believing that the world will end December 21st, 2012 for awhile now. The Mayans were NOT aliens, they were a brilliant culture and people say they were somewhat psychic. I believe that the world ends 2012, but I'm not at all worried about it...I already know where I'm headed.
As for the baby, I don't really believe it..but hey, it could happen.
Really, signs of the apocalypse are already starting to happen...we are in the fourth and final stage of the apocalypse according to the Aztecs. Some signs are worldwide currency (most of Europe is already on the euro) and Israel/Palestine making peace (which could happen at any time).

Well, the naked dude in the parking lot of the local Winco predicted it would end sometime in June 2010.
Seriously,
I think it all depends on your idea of "The End".
Could it be the end of life as we know it?
Is that really a bad thing?
Maybe it means the end of many religions.
Maybe it's predicting the return of plaid.
Maybe it'll be the end of paper money. Wonder how many will think that is the end of all ends!
Point being, the prediction just might be right. Just might not be predicting what you think it's predicting.
As for the 666 thing...
Folks freaked out about me too. Born 06-06-76, weighed 6.66, 6pm.
That's not all that unusual.
And pretty stupid to make a fuss over.

I'm going to ignore the whole 666 Jesus aspects of your question.
The Mayan Long Count calendar "end date" of 12-21-2012 isn't an end-date at all. It's like our calendar going from 1999 to 2000; theirs is going from 12 to 13 Baktuns (a Baktun is about 400 years long) so the Long Count that day is 13.00.00.00.00. But the calendar doesn't END.
Also on that date there's an astronomical alignment between the rising sun and the Milky Way which signifies the rebirth of the sun into a new age. So it's a day of beginnings, not endings.
Read "Maya Cosmogenesis 2012" by John Major Jenkins for a lot more on this subject. Read my 2012 article on my Jaguar Nights blog or my regular website for other information on that day.

Why would Pagan Mayans predict anything that had to do with the Anti-Christ, a Christian concept foreign to them? The date you speculate on is the end of the Mayan calendar. It has nothing to do with any prediction. It just starts over again. No matter how brilliant they are.. you can't expect them to create a calendar that goes on forever, can you? Have you seen this calendar?
Someone once told me that the Earth would do some serious spring cleaning. Something about every certain number of years, circle on the calendar, everyone burned their old stuff and started over, that's what she said the Earth would do. Whether it's true, I don't know.
Frankly, I think we could use a reboot. Shake off the fleas. I'm not stressing it.

It's hard to believe that the world will end on some predicted date. Especially considering how many other times it has been predicted to end. The year 2000, 06-06-06, even the year 1984 was supposed to ring in the end. To use your time to take stock in such supperstitions is ridiculous.

I don't put much stock into the whole 666 thing, but the Mayan calendar, when it was developed centuries ago, was remarkably accurate for its time, and does indeed predict an end of days in our year 2012.

the mayen calander does end in the year 2012 but that doesnt mean the end of the world. many scholars believe this to be a time of big change, Our world is already in the process of changing. And the mayens followed the stars, we are in the year of aquarious now which also can mean a time for change or rebirth.

end of Dec 2012? Which time zone?
The point is, live your life as if it is the last day. Why worry so much about myth? It does not make sense to start regretting about the "things I should have done" on your dying days.
