I need ideas on what to use as the 'target language' please. Any ideas?

you can write the description of a Marsian (physical appearance') using the vocabulary your students know and then you can dictate it to your students, but it should be a picture dictation. you read the Marsian's description and they draw it.

It depends on the student's understanding of the target language L2 (the language the student is being asked to learn) and the student's command of their L1 or home language. What you would expect from a first grader is much different than that of the high school senior. Also depending on where a student is from, they may not be familiar with certain types of clothing. A student from Hatti, now living in Maine may have never seen a winter jacket or know what it is for. Start with the parts of the body and basic descriptors, colors. Whether the person is young, old and male or female(boy or girl). Start by modeling and talking about the description of a person. If you have any command of the L1 use it or encourage students to work in pairs using their L1 with the expectation that they will provide the answer in the target language. If you are working with adults focus on the things they would need to give a police officer if the person was missing.
