It depends on your state, but in Virginia bikes are treated like ordinary motor vehicles. They should avoid sidewalks, ride the same direction as traffic, stay as far right of the road as is practicable, they should obey all traffic lights and stop signs, and they should signal before turning. To make left turns, bikes have the option of crossing lanes of traffic to maneuver into the left turn lane alongside cars, or they may make a 2-point turn by using the pedestrian crosswalks. For full details on how you should use the road while riding, check out the League of American Bicyclists' Rules of the Road (link below).

In most states you do not ride on the sidewalk unless it is a specified area for cycling. You ride on the road and obey the same rules as cars such as stop signs, right of way, you ride with the traffic, not against it. Bicycles are not allowed on most major interstate or federal highways unless special event with permission. to do so altho some highways do have bicycle lanes. A license is only needed for motorized vehicles.

Here in Ohio, if you ride on the road you have to obey the same traffic laws as people in cars. Like, stopping at lights going with the traffic, not against it, etc. I ride my bike on mountain biking trails, usually advanced because they seem to have better views.

In Ohio, if you are under 16, you can ride on the sidewalk. Over, you have to ride in the street. The law says ride with traffic. In Toledo we have several bike trails you can ride on.

Too broad a question to answer. Depends on local, regional and state regulations. Even federal, as some national parks treat the matter differently.
