It took me a bit to buy into the world he's created, but when it finally clicked I read them all back-to-back. Got my wife hooked on them too. Stick with them all and there's a HUGE payoff at the end of the 4th book. I'm a literary nut so I really got into them.

They made me laugh out loud. Fforde must have a very interesting mind to be able to come up with all of that.

I think the more well-read you are, the more you will love these books because so much of the humor is subtle. In that fourth one, where Hamlet follows Thursday back into the "real" world - I kept waiting for the "Alas, poor Yorrick..." line and I was not disappointed!

This series is one of my favourites in modern fantasy. Fforde is certainly a unique writer.

Who else would send the characters in Wuthering Heights to anger management classes??? Have Jane Eyre kidnapped from her novel? I was splitting my sides laughing! The best part of it is you don't *have* to know the literature references to enjoy the books as stories.

In reading order, the series is:

The Eyre Affair
Lost in a Good Book
The Well of Lost Plots
Something Rotten

Hope this helps!

I love them. I loved traveling through those books and talking with such a variety of different characters. Fforde's writing style is definately unique. I hope he writes more.

I think they are great! The series is the most clever and original that I've read in a long time. They are full of literary easter eggs for those of us who are paying attention.

In short: FANTASTIC! I love the way he plays with so many great characters from literature. He manages to make us laugh at them yet love them even more. Its almost satirising the literature canon!

I love and adore them! I love what he does with names especially, they make me laugh... I got a hardcover edition with a nice note from my dad which is one of the things on my list to evacuate in a hurricane.
