The most popular was Nirvana. However, Soundgarden was around before them as were many smaller, not well known bands such as Mudhoney. Nirvana and Pearl Jam are heralded as the bands that helped rid us of 80's hair bands.

I would also say The Velvet Underground, as they were around in the 60's. Just for the record though, Guns N' Roses also helped bring us out of the hair metal era. They had a few characteristics of 80's metal, but they appealed to everyone, including people who did not like hair metal.

Velvet Underground are considered pioneers of alt rock - I think their first album came out about 1968

THE FIRST ALTERNATIVE BAND WAS PUNK and there was none better than SID /sex pistols.
