Princeton Review books are always good: explain the test well, review the material, and a few practice exams. I liked 5 Steps to a 5 for calc.. not sure if the history one is good or not. And the REA one's good for practice tests, but not so much for review.

The best book for any US history class especially a AP class should not a formal text book but several different books from true historians and educators of history. Those who spend life researching history. Teach history like they do in university by using more than one book. I learn more history that way, I enjoyed history so much I now have a degree in history. Make history come alive and kids not only learn more they will at least appreciate it more and better understand where our roots come from and be able to protect our historical and cultural resources which include many national parks and historical sites.

Don't use Howard Zinn's book. The book isn't bad, but it's by no means a good text for a US history course. It assumes the reader is already familiar with mainstream US history, which would be what such a course would be meant to teach. In addition, it's kind of long-winded for a high school text.
