Okay. I'm going to Virginia and I want to take my laptop, that has wirless internet from my family's desktop (SBC Yahoo, if that matters) and I was wondering will it still work?

I'm hoping against hope that it will, because that would make the most sense, for like...business stuff, right?

But then, wouldn't the signal get lost after so many miles or whatever?

Or do I have everything wrong? Tell me! HELP ME, PLEASE!!!

A wireless router, which is what you have, has about a 100-300 ft max range. It will not work in VA.

But you can access all the sbc stuff if you get access to the internet.

What you need is a wireless card from Cingular or Verizon that uses cell phone signals for wireless internet

Each access point has a finite range within which a wireless connection can be maintained between the client computer and the access point. The actual distance varies depending upon the environment; manufacturers typically state both indoor and outdoor ranges to give a reasonable indication of reliable performance. Also it should be noted that when operating at the limits of range the performance may drop, as the quality of connection deteriorates and the system compensates.

Typical indoor ranges are 150-300 feet, but can be shorter if the building construction interferes with radio transmissions. Longer ranges are possible, but performance will degrade with distance.

Outdoor ranges are quoted up to 1000 feet, but again this depends upon the environment.

There are ways to extend the basic operating range of Wireless communications, by using more than a single access point or using a wireless relay /extension point

The range for the "wireless" service you pay for is only about 150 feet. So long distance travel with that connection isn't possible.

-BUT-

You obviously have a wireless card on your laptop, that wireless card can connect to any wireless service. If you're staying in a hotel, I bet that hotel offers wireless Internet. You have to pay a small fee usually to access, but at lest you can get access on your computer.

Another option is to find a signal that's not secure and get a free connection to the Internet. This option isn't always safe, but can sometimes get you out of a jam if you need access quickly. Here's some information about how to find a signal (or "hot spot")

If you're doing a lot of traveling or your hotel doesn't have wireless service you may consider signing up for t-mobile service. They have hot-spots in most airports, Starbucks etc. (they're usually pretty easy to find).

Once you get connected you can sign into SBC Y! with your user ID and pass to get your email/messenger etc.

Hope this helps.

Yes, unfortunately you do have it wrong. Your laptop will only work in relation to how close you are to your router. Luckily many businesses are offering free wireless internet access. Panera bread is one that I know of for sure. I have a laptop that I use wirelessly, and I live next door to a Panera bread and I can pick up their signal. I don't know if you are going on vacation or what, but most hotels offer internet access too. Hope this helps!
