There's nothing wrong with choosing sterling silver, however it is true that it tarnishes quicker and is hard to bring it back to that initial shine. White gold is actually a better investment long term, and the price varies depending on the karat you select (I believe it goes from 10-24 here in the states). What I would suggest is starting with a promise ring until you save up for an engagement ring. It doesn't have the same weight symbolically that an engagement ring does, but it will give you time to put money towards the wedding ring set you choose for you and your soon-to-be fiancee.

I say don't try cleaner either. Try rubbing with toothpaste rinse well and polish with soft cloth till dry.
