You will NOT develop physical dependence-maybe psychological. If you mean Nyquil-then yes,it has all kinds of different drugs in it besides what makes you sleepy. If you meant Nytol, it only has diphenhydramine, also known as Benadryl, which is what makes you sleepy. It might be good to try to figure out what causes your insomnia, but if you're like me you can't always avoid it-and taking diphenhydramine a couple times a week absolutely won't hurt you. Ambien is also really good but not everyone can afford to see a doctor regularly to get a prescription and also is kinda expensive. Generic diphenhydramine is $5 for 100 25mg tablets at Walmart-most people only need one, some two(don't take more than 50mg).

is it bad to take nite-quil a couple of nights a week to go to sleep? Why would it be bad?

If you are experiencing sleeplessness on a regular basis, it may point to some sort of sleep disorder such as sleep apnea or some sort of stress. While taking Nyquil every night is a temporary fix, it might be more beneficial to know the underlying cause of your sleep problems. Also, when you take Nyquil, you are taking all of the ingredients for treating cold and flu symptoms, so you're putting unnecessary chemicals into your body.

It's not bad to take it once in awhile. For many reasons we can get out of the habit of sleeping, stress whatever. It's OK to take it for a few days in a row to get your body in it's pattern to go to sleep. But that's it. You don't want to continue to take it constantly, because it is addicting and then you can't go to sleep without it. About every 6 months, couple of times a year, I end up having to take a benedryl for a couple of nights and then I'm fine.

I don't think that once in a while would be bad, but to take this or any other over the counter medication for a long period of time will cause your immune system to get use to the medication, there for when you actually need to take something for a cold it will not be as affective, please talk to your doctor for a sleeping aid medication and explain to him you haven't been sleeping right.

mine did the same thing at around the same time too. I think it was teething as she is now much better but it was 2-3 months of hell. She used to get up about 9 times a night sometimes not 1 or 2.
