The on-board sound card is capable of giving pure digital sound output, which when you connect it to a very good Hi-Fi music system, you get a real good acoustics. I would say this much is much sufficient for a good sound quality.
However, if you want to have a Surround Sound, there are two options :
a). Either you connect your on-board sound card output to a 5.1 - 7.1 surround dolby digital amplifier.
b) Or you buy a dolby surround sound card for you surround system configuration. (in this case, you have to disable the on-board sound card from the CMOS settings before you install the new sound card)
I hope this answers to your needs....

Its not necessary at all to install a new soundcard, in some cases onboard sound is better than a cheap soundcard. But if you want surround sound 7.1 and crystal clear DvD ect ect, Then you would need one. Just keep your onboard sound card drivers up to date, and you should never have trouble with it.

If you just want basic sound, the built-in sound system will be fine. If you want multi-channel sound and other effects like surround sound, etc., then an add-in board is the only way to go.

you can use the one on-board. But if you are into serious gaming or a music lover or want to enjoy the sound effects on a movie, then a good quality sound card would be needed.

It will depend on what exactly you want from your sound card. If you do not care, then save the money and use the onboard card. If you want higher quality sound, or more features, you may have to buy a card.

It depends on the quality of sound you desire, basic = use the free one in the motherboard and save some $$. But, if you want surrond sound dolby 6.1, go get you a new soundcard.
