I agree with 'john d' the trilogy was very good, about on a par with Dune.
All a matter of personal opinion I suppose.
What really disappoints me is watching the movie after reading the book, a real let down, I cant understand why that should be so?
I don't just mean Sci-Fi, but any film I have ever seen (based on a book) has been rubbish in comparison, inc The Godfather.

Best ever series? Not in my opinion. Definitely on the top 10, and the first book, Dune, ranks as one of my top 1 or 2 novels ever. However, Children of Dune, Dune Messiah, all sort of dragged. Chapterhouse Dune was probably the only other one that I really liked.

For Sci-fi series (as opposed to fantasy), I like Orson Scott Card's Ender series, although it also started to get too mystical towards the end. The prequel aren't bad.

Other Sci-fi series that I've read and liked are Julian May's Metaconcert series, Asimov's Foundation/Robot series, Dan Simmons' Hyperion, and Clark's 2001 series.

Dune is indeed a great science fiction series. So many books allows for building a large and detailed universe for the story and Herbert has done an excellent job. Personally, I think Foundation is better, many othe science fiction fans agree as Foundation won the Hugo for best all time series consisting of three or more books. Also nominatd for that award were The Lord of The Rings and Anne McCaffrey's Drongonrider series. Both of these are also excellent and well worth reading. If You haven't read these I have no hesitation at recommending them to you.

Steve Perry and the 97th Step, The Man that Never Missed, Albino Knife, Brother Death, Matadora, Black Steel.

They are probably my absolute favorite sci-fi...especially since I'm more partial to fantasy sci-fi.

For me the best series (and one of the best films too) was the 2001 a Space Odyssey by Arthur C Clarke

No way! You need to look at some of the older writers. The science may be outdated but the stories are timeless.

Isaac Asimov
Robert Heinlein
H Beam Piper

I liked the first one, but not the sequels.
Now I am reading the Prelude to Dune series.

Foundation trilogy by Asimov is the best.
Earthsea by Ursula Leguin if you like magical SF.
