your sound card should free up system resources when configured correctly
but with a system like that it would have to be a really nice sound card to notice any difference under load i work at GAMMing LAN center and im here now

some reviews on the newwwwest sound blaster can do all the sound processing and skip cpu freeing up resources cost money

on older computers older kicking sounds card make a notice able difference
but on board now a days is pretty desent

No, it doesn't necessarily mean it's using memory. The only type of integrated device that will is video. But to my knowledge, sound does not.

I suggest you download Belarc Advisor or Sisoft Sandra to run some diagnostics on your PC if you're really concerned. Truthfully, I wouldn't even take the time to research what happened to 60-70 MB. I see that you have a SB card per your specs. Why not install that and disable the integrated Realtek? That would surely tell you if it's using the memory.

Why such an old slow hard drive ? Get a SATA Drive for that board (I have the same board.)

There is no specific RAM devoted to integrated sound. There is no RAM on stand alone sound cards. Sounds like 1.93 is right. XP with SP2 takes up RAM itself.

Everything , integrated or not ,uses memory. Integrated video can use significant memory i.e. 32, 64 or even 128mb. Unlike video, audio does not directly map shared memory . Instead, it is the software driver that eats up memory.Given that you have 2gb of memory, I wouldn't worry about it.
