She needs to get used to your scent. Take an old shirt that you don't wear much, wear it for a day and then cut a small piece of it off and put it in her cage. Chances are she'll end up dragging it into her sleeping area and nesting with it. You might also try cutting off just a little bit of your hair and tying it up in a ball in the toe of a knee-high stocking, then cutting that off the rest of the knee high and putting the ball with your hair in her cage. Every day, put your hand in the bottom of her cage, palm up, with a treat on it that she does not get any other time and just sit quietly for 15 minutes or so at a time. If/when she climbs onto your hand to get the treat, don't try to pick her up immediately, just let her sit there and eat the treat. After you have done that for a couple of weeks, you can try gently patting her with the forefinger of your other hand as she eats the treat, but don't push too hard; she needs to learn to trust you. Be patient, eventually she will let you handle her.

Start by getting her used to your hand being in her cage. Take a treat or food that she likes and put it on the cage floor. Then before she eats it set your hand gently on the floor on the cage close to, but not right in top of the treat. When you first do this it will definitely take a while to get her to come down and eat the treat. Just have patience and don't make any sudden movements. After she has eaten the treat with your hand just in the cage for a few days and she is used to your hand being there, place the treat in your hand. Once you get to the point that she is eating put of your hand you should be able to hold her and play.

Be kind and hold the critter a lot. Over time it will get over it and learn to trust you. It is natural for animals to be frightened of such a big critter as yourself.

A tip I use.
Coax her into her plastic rolly ball thign if she has one.
Rolling around in it helps her get used to things touching her
The more you play and touch her, she'll be comfortable.
And if you wake a hamster, don't EVER try and touch it just after it opens its eyes especially male hamsters.. they are dazed and will try to bite.

Ah...female hamsters let off this stinky smell when they go into heat. I'm not sure how close you want to get to her.
