like it damages your hair? Can it prematurely age your face irreparably?

2006-06-19 17:31:06 · 11 answers · asked by Anonymous in Sports Swimming & Diving

I swim at night. So no sun. But skin looks older the next morning. I put face cream on after. I have seen on Marathon swimmers on TV . . .that sometimes they will put something on their face BEFORE swimming like a barricade . . maybe vaseline . . .I may try . . but I think I would break out from it.

Chlorine has bleach in it. No one would ever think of washing his or her hair in bleach, but that's what you're exposing yourself to every time you jump in the pool. I don't know about premature aging, but chlorine dries the skin severely and therefore, extra care should be taken before and after you swim.

Before I swim, I put a light coating of conditioner in my dry hair. Then I put on a cap. This protects my hair somewhat from the damaging effects of chlorine. If I'm swimming outdoor in the daytime, I always, always wear sunscreen. Be sure not to miss the back of your body, since you tend to expose your posterior to the sun when swimming. This is the single most important thing you can do to protect yourself from longterm damage (not to mention skin cancer).

After swimming, I wash my hair and condition it immediately. I shower to get all the sunscreen off, then while I'm still drying off, I put lotion on my entire body and moisturizer on my face.

Yes, but if you moisturize you should be fine. Certain body oils are stripped by pool chemicals. That is why the pool has to be "shocked" after a certain amount of swimmers. Sun does the worst damage though.

YES!!! Chlorine alone does damage to your skin, making it extra dry amongst other things, which is why you should shower and lotion immediately. It also damages your hair. Something you should talk to you doctor about, they will have more answers for you but at least i got you some what started.

the chemicals actually clear your face from blemishes but may dry it out and cause it to age a bit if you dont take care of your skin.
