What is the best mode of travel? Purchase the travel bus before leaving or take pot luck with a taxi when we get to airport? it is about 40 miles to hotel from airport.

Book it with your travel agent before you arrive. When you get to CUN, there will be seemingly hundreds of Mexicans trying to sell you a van/ cab ride to your resort. Are you really good at converting dollars to pesos? I'm not. I liked knowing the price up front and not having them decide what price you pay when you get there. They are good at ripping off tourists.

From the airport to anywhere: exclusive-taxis charge non-negotiable US$40.00 or MX$400.00. you can always pay US dollor for taxi, and pay in any of the taxi stands inside the airport. You can take a collective taxi ("colectivo") for much less, you just have to travel with other passengers and share the cost (good way to save money). i think it's worth to take taxi than take the bus, since you will easily save 1 hour of precious vacation time.

I would pay for transfers ahead of time. AND pay extra for non-stop. AND when you get on the vehicle remind the driver that you paid extra for non-stop (especially when you have to wait for other passengers). You will end up being the only passengers OR you will be the first ones dropped off to your hotel. Otherwise, you may be one of the last dropped off. DON'T get a taxi, it's very expensive. Take the ferry to Cozumel (every hr. except for noon ... siesta. And shop for the best price and boat.)You will LOVE Playa del Carmen. Enjoy!

Outside the airport there are several companies of transportation that offer you a van. I have been in Cancun several times and i have always asked for the van.

If you book a travel package, the tour company or travel agent can have trasfers put on your package. Otherwise get a taxi, but before you get in ask them how much it will be.
