Back in the day, people used to straight out deny that animals could feel pain. It was some sort of religious belief. What was the deal with that?

I don't think that animals feel emotional pain, at least not to the extent that we do. Physical pain for sure. But I think that look in a pet's eyes as you're heading out the door is just fear that you may not be coming back to feed it and care for it. I may be wrong though. Science may discover that some animals have as complex emotions as we do. Who knows?

I guess I don't know what religious belief you're talking about. Could you explain some more, maybe give a website?

Technically NOT all animals are capable of feeling pain. Some animals (like insects for example) lack the nerve receptors that are responsible for the sensation of pain. There are species that genetically are not capable of feeling pain in the manner that humans do.

While some mammal species are known to suffer from depression, anxiety, shock, just like humans.

they believed that because the animals they encountered such as domestic animals like cows and pigs didn't have intelligence levels as high as humans and were a bit slow, so they assumed if they were that stupid and slow, they must not have emotional or physical feelings or know the sensations of pain. this is pretty ignorant, but truthfully, we can't really know. sure, animals groan and moo and stuff when they might be hurt, but could it really be processed into pain for them or simply annoyance?

I've never heard anyone suggest that all animals feel no pain--it's obvious that vertebrates can and do feel pain.

As for lobsters and other crustaceans, it's a scientific fact that they do no have the brain or nervous system to feel what we would call "pain"

It really makes me mad that some people believe that! All they have to do is watch any animal and they will find out that they can feel just like humans.

I think the deal is that unfortunalty humans are at the top of the food chain, but we are not the smartest. We are murderers and we are destroying ourselves, the environment and the creatures on this planet.

I do believe that animals feel pain; not to such an extent a human feels pain, but they do feel pain.

That wouldn't be logical. When I accidentally stepped on my dog's tail this morning and she yelped, I instinctively knew that I had hurt her. But then those religious nuts only believe what they're told to believe, so it's hard to say.

They do not feel pain in any way comparable to how humans feel pain.
