There are a few reasons that I suspect:
1. they don't take the time to understand the game
2. they like slower paced games...all that running is too stressful for the watchers
3. they like high scoring games (which soccer isn't because it is a more difficult game than other sports)
4. since it was not a sport that originated in the U.S., they don't want to embrace it...might be seen as unAmerican

Personally, I love soccer. I love the constant action and the lack of those ridiculous time outs that most other sports have.

It really has to do with the basic American mentality. Soccer is a game where failure is frequently expected, on scoring drives, on getting a corner kick inside the box, even in making a successful pass, players normally fail. Also it is a sport designed with little glamor, star players aren't really provided any opportunities to show off their talents.

On top of that soccer has a much different flow than most American sports. It is a game principally of attrition, which some people confuse for action, where two teams just steal the ball back and forth from each other while getting very few real chances at scoring goals (which is the point of the game). Some people claim that Americans don't like soccer because it is too low scoring, but that misses the point. Comebacks are virtually impossible and that robs the game of excitement at the end.

These reasons, and probably many more, mean that Americans are not likely to adopt the sport as a favorite anytime soon.

I do not know why we are not big on soccer but it is changing, i think (slowly). As our children start to play we are realizing what a cool sport this is. I also believe that women have alot to do with this! I know (as an American) alot more women that are watching the WC than men. I think this is because our kids play soccer and want to watch the game, and since it is summer vacation here we end up watching it with them and get involved. We need a few Brett Farves, Tom Bradys or Warren Sapps of the soccer world to get involved and it would take off in the US. McBride is a good start. My 7 yr old thought the bloody face was SO cool. And that he went right back out....heroic! US loves a winner. If we were to win the WC (I know dreaming) or even do exceptionally well I think soccer would get bigger here overnite!

Sam, I think soccer is the #6 or #7 sport in the US, so I think Americans a relatively interested in soccer. (Top 4 are Gridiron, Baseball, Basketball and Motor Racing, next level is Ice Hockey, Tennis, Golf and Soccer). 15 years ago soccer was DEAD in the U.S. Now, the National Teams (Men and Women) draw well in attendance and compete highly internationally and MLS is still surviving. I think in the next 10 years soccer can be the #5 sport in the U.S. It takes time, and Americans areconverting.

Simply, it was just never part of our culture. In other countries all around the world, soccer united the people because it was such a simple pure sport that anyone could play and it became part of the people's lives and their culture, overall. Here in the U.S. it just never took that route and it's doubtful that soccer will ever become a major sport, although we may produce solid national teams.

Because they have alot of other sports attraction in their country like the NBA, NCAA, MLB, WNBA and of course the NHL or the American Football.

Same question goes with why Americans arent big in Cricket or Squash? Am I right?

We don't understand it. The clock counting up is confusing and the outfits or uniforms don't look very cool. There is not enough scoring and allowing a game to end in a tie is just unamerican.
