There is a "Request Receipt" function in email software such as Outlook or Outlook Express, however when sending from Yahoo's "webmail" interface, I have not yet found a way to do this. So the answer is partially no.
Technically you could put a bit of HTML code in the email, a code such as a web counter or tracker, this would function to notify you if your friend opened the email.
An image hosted on a website that you can get HTTP stats for would also work, but only if your friend has HTML enabled, AND opens the email not just reads the subject and skips over it.

after the email address, add : ".confirm.to"
without the quotes ..
like ur sendin' to : hihihi@yahoo.com
u should put this in the "to" section : hihihi@yahoo.com.confirm.to
u can use this like 10 times in a month, i think itz only provided by yahoo and msn (hotmail) ..
