The main one I can think of is J.M. Coetzee- the South African author.... divided Africa, author in 'exile', growing up white in Africa etc. Paul Auster as well... fun to read yet also socially insightful...

You absolutely need to read any and all books by Toni Morrison. To get you started you should begin with Beloved and then maybe The Bluest Eye or Tar Baby. Although her books are taught in school, she is still very much alive and writing. She has also won the Nobel Prize in literature. She's unbelievable.

JK Rowling, simply for getting mass quantities of kids reading again through her genuis ; Dan Brown for causing such controversy among all sects and for making people think about the possibility; Stephen King for continuing to create new nightmares and making even the simplest of things scary; and Richard Bach, whose work Jonathan Livingston Seagull is already being taught in schools, and who continues to write allegorical stories that continue to be brilliant.

That's a tough question. It's always hard to know what will survive over time, as most people have never read (or heard of) most of the best-selling books in the 19th century, for example.

Teianna. She's one of the greatest current authors because although she hasn't been discovered, her books and the way that they're masterly carried out is dream like for nerds...or me.
