My father, god bless him, is great dad, but he can't say I love you,
many of the men in the family are the same. I know he loves me and I accept that he doesn't say it but what is it about those words that makes them freeze up?

honey he sounds like he was raised "old school", some men raised in the south do not show thier emotions. It is not manly. My father is 67 years old on my 16th birthday is the first time I ever remember him telling me he loved me. He probably tells you in other ways.

Thats a good question. My side of the family ((like my sisters, mom, paternal grandparents say it to eachother)) but my mothers parents, and aunties and uncles dont say it to us like good bye on the phone. ITs weird. Maybe the reason is that theyre afraid to show their emotions that might make them feel more vulnerable. or they just think that you know how much they love you and figure that should be enough. Nonetheless just make sure you say it everyday:) Like Garth says if tommorrow never comes....

These words mean a lot and they aren't words that should be thrown around. I'm sure your father really does love you, but i think this is something that a lot of guys have a hard time saying.

He has a hard time saying it because he is INSECURE. He is afraid. He is afraid his authority over you may be somehow compromised if you know he loves you!
He has probably been hurt by someone in his life.
You should tell him you need to hear it from him. He WILL die someday and it will be good to actually hear it before he goes!

Your father loves you more than you know.
He may not say this, but the most important thing is to know, and accept it.
You might want to let him know just how much he is appreciated as well...
