I having been watching the World Cup and had to call my son's soccer coach! My boys are 7 and 4 and we got called for slide tackeling in a game....apparently it is not allowd until you reach 9 yr old play. We also are not allowed to touch other players in any way, shape or form (during same game we got called for holding ..at other coach's whining...i have to think they were kind of wusses!). I was VERY suprised to see how much contact there was between players during a pro soccer match. I have to think it is a VERY physical sport.

it is understandable why they do not let slid tackling at a young age cause the injuries at that age can be pretty serious for a 4-7 year and discouraging the might not want to play. But yes Football(soccer) is a Physical sport it's just the way the game is played i have had to give up playing soccer to to countless ankle injuries but it is the price you pay to play a great sport. to the people that think soccer is a sport for wussies i would like to see you get on a soccer Field and play a 90 min game, you wouldn't even last.

Yes, soccer (or football as it should be called) is indeed much more physical than Americans believe it to be. It's without a doubt a contact sport in my opinion. Vicious slide tackles, pushing and pulling of the opposing teams on set pieces, and the occasional elbow to the face are common in a good competitive match. However, unlike many other sports, this display of competitiveness adds to the overall feeling of the game's intensity while keeping the action moving along (no time-outs, camera re-plays, etc.) It's such a pure sport, and a contact sport at that.

"Soccer, like lacrosse, is a sport for boys that are too small to play a real sport, like football or basketball. FACT!"

Translation: I'm too much of an out-of-shape fatass to be able to play a physically demanding sport like soccer, so I play sports like football that have breaks every 15 seconds and require little movement.

Well, congratulations on picking soccer cause it is the best game for them.

It isnt really physical until in the teens when players know their limits and the rules more.

Yes, there is some physicalness to it. The thing I don't get is why the players barely get touched and flop to the ground like they just had their leg broken. I know there can be some tough injuries, but geesh.

I've played soccer for many years, and it is a very physical "contact" sport.
