I'd go with a Dell.
I've had many different computers and Dell seems to be the best. All of my "computer geek" friends speak highly of Dell.
And, if you notice, a lot of businesses and organizations use Dell computers.

I would recommend a Dell. My last 4 PCs (over about an 8 year span) have all been Dells and I work from home as a programmer, I tend to beat up computers a little bit. First 2 were desktops and the last 2 laptops. My previous laptop even survived a low speed motorcycle accident. I still have both laptops (and they function) and I am still using the first desktop as the server in my home network. The only issue I have had with either of my laptops is the CD-Rom drive went in both of them. I purchased the warranty and Dell overnighted me the replacement part each time. The only negative I have to offer is that they outsourced their phone support overseas. The hold time is longer than in the past and occassionally you may have difficulty understanding the support person.
Laptops are much better these days than in the past. It's nice to be able to plop on the couch and chill with the laptop once in a while. You will still get more computer for your money by going with a desktop though. I can't help you increase your budget, but if you want and can afford a laptop go for it.

i don't think u should buy a dell because even if a lot of people say that it works really. Well, they're wrong. It only works for a short time.
I think that u should buy hp or Compaq (it's the same thing). I know that it works really well because first of all i work there and second of all, all of my computers are hp or Compaq.(sane thing)
Well, if you want to go under 1000$ you'll be needing a desktop.
Don't worry, hp is under 1000$. Even the really good ones are under 1000$.
Well i hope that you will do the best!!!

personally from my opinion, dells are good desktop computers, but i find that windows laptops aren't the greatest, but there are some windows laptops that are good. I have had some problems with my dell notebook, but it could be just because it is old. It is pretty much a matter of preference and which laptop you want to buy

Do not buy a Dell! Buy an off brand, they are much better. Here's a website where you can find some. And Acer is a great brand.
newegg.com
I bought an Acer laptop from that site about a year ago and it still works like new!

get a dell if you don't know anything about computers because they have great technical support. Unless you will use your computer at work or need to carry your files with you to a coffee shop then just get a desktop computer, a laptop is not for you. desktops give you more computer power for the money because there is no need for them to be compact. My personal suggestion is a desktop.

It'd probably be easier to stay under 1,000 with a desktop, but laptops aren't crap at all.
And Dell is a good computer. I'm happy with mine.

I would recommend a Dell. I bought their least expensive laptop around last Christmas for about $400, which is a good deal for a new laptop. And it has performed flawlessly. I like a laptop better because it is portable.

While the price of any computer is falling a desktop is usually less than a laptop. The first question is why do you need the computer? If its just email on the cough that's different than the need to to spreadsheets and P/L statements...
I prefer Apple's, but cost is tough.

Buy the CHEAPEST computer. You will have to buy a new one anyway after 3/4 years.
Do not buy on-line. Instead buy at local store like cc/compusa/office-depot/staples/bestbuy. You will get equally good deals--especially on the coming 4th of July.
You can get a very good PC for $500-$700. Have at least 512 RAM and dvd-write. Buy more hard-disks down the road.
