...or would you just watch 'whatever's on' because it's on?

I actually experimented with this a few years ago when I returned from living in Japan. Having lived overseas for almost two years, I decided not to simply go back to my life as it was before. So initially, I went without cable (or satellite, which I've never had), a cell phone, magazine subscriptions, etc. Gradually, I began reinstating such habits and possessions but I was intrigued to see how long it would take to make the adjustment.

Well, the television thing was intriguing. I found that without benefit of the usual gazillion channels (and options to waste time sitting in front of the idiot box), I watched little to no TV. In fact, limited as I was to only local network fare, I relied heavily on PBS if and when I actually did watch TV at all. I was almost proud of myself for not returning to form... almost.

What ended up happening was that I basically bowed to social pressures. This is almost a topic for another question but I realized how much watching and following sports serves as a function of social bonding (particularly with my fellow males). So that eventually necessitated getting ESPN. Loving films as I do, I also missed TCM. Picture quality was another major issue (have you tried using rabbit ears recently? good grief!). And before I knew it -- in this case, within two months -- I was back to my old habits.

But hey, I am still living without a cell phone and that's something, isn't it? :-)

I have cable but I still don't watch much. Just sports usually. I have lived for about a year without cable before though, and yes I hardly watched tv. I went quite a few months without watching. And it's weird when you are away from it for a long time because when you do watch it, it seems very strange and fast paced. You can also realize the influence it has on our culture. Try it if you want a strange experience.

As long as Fox25 is still available, then I would watch the TV.
I lived in this woman's house for about 4 months and she had no cable. I could only watch Fox, but most of the time it was staticy. She didn't have the internet either, so I got good use out of my DVD player :)

I think that generally because you have more choice the 'standard' of what you watch increases. How many people just turn the tv on for a particular programme they want to watch, I think most people tend to browse the channels and with more channels to choose from are more likely to watch something they're really interested in. I'm often amazed at the absoloute tripe people watch (me included) just because theres nothing else on.
Our Family gave up tv for several months a few years back, and after a bumpy start it was amazing how succsessful it was. I come from a big faminly (three brothers and two sisters) and after a few weeks it was really nice to walk into the sitting room to find people drawing, reading, listening to music and even talking to each other, it made me realise what an obnoxious presence tv can often have in our lives. Think of the time you would have for other things if you weren't glued to that 'idiot box'

satellite tv for pc tend to offer extra clever reception and actual HD photograph. Cable based the place you're can get fantastically expensive. I had Direct television then switched to Cox Cable. I switched good back with the aid of fact of value and photograph! .

Well.. in your thoughtful question, I must say, I probably wouldn't watch at all.

My kids get a kick out of watching cartoons, (We have that as a plus in our Direct Tv choices).. but I have said in the past.. during the Summer months.. there are so many OTHER things to do than to be in front of a TV watching goofy shows.

I rarely have the moments to watch TV.. and when I do... it has to be something really interesting in contrast with real life to capture and keep my attention..

The escape of TV is fun now and then, but when real life measures up to be so much more and better than any show.. who needs it?

I probably would watch less tv because all the great channels like Discovery Health, History Channel, A&E,Documentary, CNN, TCM, HGTV,Discovery, and Animal Planet wouldn't be available.

Definetly. All the good shows are on cable. I'd have to watch the news.

I hardly watch TV as it is. If I had no cable, I probably wouldn't watch any.
