There are times when I really think that this guy may sorta kinda like me, but then he's always saying "you're a great friend" and i'm not really sure what he means by it.

it means maybe he likes you more than a friend sometimes and thinks you notice.. so he says you are a great friend to cover it up.

Pretty plain and simple. He is either gay or he's just not that into you. If he likes you, you will know for sure. He will never use the friend word unless you have expressed him as a great friend first. I am sorry to say but I think he just doesn't want to hurt your feelings so he is trying to let you down nicely.

He means you're a great friend! I've been my guy friend's best friend for years. There's flirting, laughing, we get along great! He considers you his friend, you're good to talk to, he can tell you things without worrying. Don't try to read too much into things. When he starts having feelings for you, you'll know, he'll probably tell you. If you act on things without knowing, and you really value his friendship then it may get weird and ruin things.
Great friends know the real you and like you anyway.

It means he feels safe with you...safe to be himself snd share things with you about himself as though you were another one of his guy friends but because you are female which he is not used to a female being that way only his guy friends there is something new and interesting about it. Some of the greatest relationships are built on friendship.

Depends on the way he says it! Read his body language. If he touches you a lot and/or looks you over appreciatively, he might be looking for something physical. If he says it in a too-casual throwaway fashion, it means he appreciates you platonically but is probably not attracted to you romantically. If he looks you straight in the eye with tenderness as he says it, it is pure and simple love. Otherwise, he is a damn good actor.

Guys talk so that girls can't understand what they really mean, he could be saying I just want to be friends, or he could be saying he likes you, but is to shy to act on his feelings, if you like him I say that you make the first move, if it turns out he doesn't like you then explain to him why you thought he did.
