This question will differ widely depending on how old you are. The really "great" songs of early rock 'n roll (prior to the mid '60's) aren't played anymore so most young people (under 25) have only heard a very small sample of what defined an entire generation of music.

That said it is almost a long forgotten artist or group that truly deserves the distinction 'of all time'. My vote goes to:

"Sh Boom" by The Chords

Too young to remember the song when it was first released in 1954 (I was 3), all those that I know who grew up at that time have told me "Sh Boom" was the 'original' song of rock 'n roll and deserved far more recognition than it got in later years.

If you ever get a chance to hear it, think of yourself as a timid six or seventh grader totally captivated by that gorgeous new girl who has just moved into town. It doesn't matter if it is 1954 or 2004, the song is still!

Thats a hard one. I have a favourite song for each mood, for all kinds of weather, and any day of the week.
But I would have to say that my favourite of all time has to be "To Love Somebody" by Janis Joplin. It makes me wanna cry everytime I hear it.
