The security deposit check is already in the mail, and my roommate and I were just about to send in our signed copy of the lease, when she announced she'd found alternate tenants. I know this is probably legal, but still I'm sooo disappointed. And now how do I make sure she doesn't cash my check for the security deposit??

Have you told her that you have already signed the lease papers and that you have mailed her the security deposit? She sounds like a real piece of work.

I would suggest you call your bank first thing in the morning to have them place a "Stop Payment" on the check. That way you can be sure she won't try to cash it.

Good luck finding a new place. If that's what your landlord was like, you might want to reconsider being disappointed and start thinking that it's a good thing you didn't move in there in the first place. Who knows what other kinds of problems you would've had, if that's how they treat their future tenants.
