Teaching ppl to be sensitive to others is a healthy thing.
Using terminology that is of a negative tone is detrimental. For example, I can't stand to hear the phrase, "runs like a girl." unless it is actually about someone running I guess. But most of the time it is referring to running away like a coward. That always ticks me off when I believe women have more courage than men when it comes for standing up and fighting for what we believe in at all cost.
With all that said though, it can be taken to the extreme. And I have no clue what has happen to the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones but words can never hurt me."
That teaches us to let negative things bounce off us and that we choose to let somebody's elses opinion of us hurt us or not. We seem to have lost that mentality.
Oh yeah I wanted to add a funny story: myself and a friend were talking and she slipped and called someone she knows a damn jew for some financial deal they did. My eyebrows went up.... and she, knowing I am of jewish race, immediately started backtracking. I then said, 'damn Irish drunk' because she is Irish and drinks A LOT. She said ohhh good one and we laughed for I bet half an hour.

1. It's been called the swine flu for 50+ years and who in the world told you Muslims cared about what we 'nickname' a disease? 2. Who doesn't call terrorists terrorists - I hear the word all the time. 3. Terrorists are now on our streets? Really? Tell me where because you seem to be only spouting fears and confusion but don't seem to have any real information. 4. You should read more. 5. Political correctness has nothing to do with torture. The point of America changing that policy has to deal with the propaganda we put out as a nation about how great and fair and democratic we are; putting ourselves above others, when we were doing exactly what "they" were and claiming not to be. 6. Besides the real world, where people continue to say what they want when they want about whoever they want (since it's still a free country and is in The Constitution); there's the internet where regardless of what race you are saying what you want, negative or positive is always and forever gonna happen. (Unless, of course, someone has something to say about European whites stealing this country and killing the Natives of this country to make it "theirs". That, would be politically incorrect, I guess.)

I addressed this question a few weeks ago. I believe this practice of not allowing the simple truth to be the final word. Is not as simple as I would like. I think the practice of suing every time we got the chance, every time a T was not crossed an I with out a dot. Is one factor. I also believe that the atmosphere of I'm OK your OK. is also a factor.Let me explain the truth as we knew it was set aside as the thinking of there are no absolutes.became more popular. We have left the FACTS aside because we don't want to hurt any ones feelings. Well guess what up is still up, white is still white.etc.etc. You see people really do things that are wrong. People don't speak disingenuously, they LIE.

During the past six months, I have forgotten that concept! I don't care if I offend anyone anymore. I have been offended way too much regarding our country and the morals of people here. So, to those who use the race card, and gay rights, and so on to the tune of "being offended" and "my rights" bull crap: Tough! You have offended me long enough and I have remained silent. No more. We, the silent majority, can no longer sit idly by and continue to be offended by the actions of the users of the system. Stand up and be counted. Speak your mind before it is too late. United we stand, divided we fall.

Because, in line with the American way, people want compensation for their hardships. If someone suffers because someone else said something wrong, they sue, because, also in line with the American way, money is the easiest and most sought after form of compensation. People don't want to be sued. Furthermore, America is a land of conformists. Even the non-conformists all look alike. Being politically incorrect alienates the incorrect individual and conflicts with the desire to be accepted by one's peers.

I guess it is due to the racial conflicts there have been through history. Many groups have fought and shed blood to get the respect they deserved. So now many issues are still fresh and people don't want to go back to times when (for example) African-Americans were called "black" or "color" people and at the same times there was a lot of discrimination.

I personally don't give a damn if I offend anyone or not. I don't do it deliberately, at least not usually, but if someone takes offense to something completely innocuous, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.
