I would say hardware. Hardware is the technical stuff that lets the software work. Like, a cd player: The actual player is the hardware but the software plays on it. You can't play the software without the hardware. With things like computers it's the same way. Anyone can make a plastic or metal machine but if you want it to do something fancy you have to have software to put in it. And if you just have software but nothing to read it or carry out the commands, you'll get nowhere as well. I could own this computer I'm on right now but if they didn't have the software for me to download internet explorer, I wouldn't be here right now. Make sense?

That's about like "Which came first the chicken or the egg." Well the chicken of course, it had to lay the egg. And the same follows through that the hardware had to be available until any type of software could be useful to the hardware. Makes sense to me. What to you think? I mean why would anyone create software if there were not a hardware product that needed it? The mother hen wanted some chicks so she got together with her software pal (the rooster) and made it happen. No problem.

Of course hardware, hardware is not suppose to be for computer only, there are so many hardware that doesn't need any software to work. even the if you learn about the logic and the GATE, you'll know that the hardware can do something without using any programming, it's just the way they operate that can make them working. So, in other word, software (which depends on hardware -eg computer) cannot comes first before hardware.

Definately hardware.
Why?
Well plain and simple, without hardware you wouldnt be able to use software.
A little more indepth?
Some original computer hardware applications perhaps. How about a calculator. A calculator contains no software. Its all hardware transistor gates and or things. It doesnt require software. Software came about as a process of technical evolution due to the ever changing needs of a Human. If Bill Gates was able to develop the perfect Windows OS he would have it hardcoded onto a chip faster than you could say monopoly. Why? Because you cant crack hardware and then distribute it willy nilly across the internet. Hardware based programming (similar to original NES') is coming back to us my friends.

hardware comes first. If you don't have hardware you can run the software.
Hardware is the things you can feel and touch sofware is what runs on the hardware. It is also programs and the operating system. You don't need software to turn your light on just hardware but if you don't have software you can't get things done that you want. Hardware has always been first software 2nd

Hardware.
Hardware is the thing that makes software run. You cannot run software without a motherboard because the motherboard runs the software. On the other hand, programs can be programmed right into the hardware, so, like the BIOS, you don't have to have software to perform some commands.

I'd say hardware because a lot of hardware come installed on the computer befroe you purchase software. So you get to that first before you get to the software.

I would have to say the hardware, plain and simple, no cpu no computer. The Cpu by far is the most important piece of hardware to a computer, without it, you just have an oversized paperweight.
