if the carb has a red wire on the bottom, ony kill it from full throttle. if it dosent kill from idle. some mowers have a head pipe leading to the muffler with a slip joint that will let air enter the muffler causing server back fire. the joint can be sealed with permatex ultra copper silacone, auto parts stores have this for about 4.99 .

Probably there is too much carbon build-up in the piston head or cylinder. This could be creating hot spots within your cylinder that sparks the backfire. Clearing the carbon deposits by adding a solvent into the gas should help. Look for carburettor/injector cleaner additive for car and use this in your mower. Should help out lots.

I had a Ford Garden Tractor that did that. I never figured it out but if I let id idle a few seconds before I shut it off it was less likely to do it.

Apparently it didn't hurt anything because it did it for years.

I changed the plug, changed fuel, tried high test, adjusted the carburetor and on & on. Nothing worked. I gave up & lived with it.

I've been in the small engine repair business for 22 years.
The best thing to do is have your carbburetor cleaned and rebuilt.
Also Briggs and Stratton and Tecumseh recommend that you throttle down the engine befor keying off.
