Frankly, it's a self-esteem issue. They see "eating" food as eating away their troubles or whatever it is that's holding them back in their lives...
Over-eating is a way of comfort to these people just as some go to the gym, read a book, etc.

No not at all. It's a compulsive disorder. There are some patients with damage to one of the lobes (forget which one) who will eat and eat and eat b/c their brains don't tell them when they are full.

Heck ya it's irrational. Who would rationally allow themselves to become fat cows/pigs and become sick with the over stuffing of themselves?
