Depressing.

Well.... like, half true.
You can change your life (this is the true half) by getting a better job, making reasonable choices, or meeting that special someone. Or, (in the opposite direction) you could make one colossal mistake that could cost you. That would change your life, too.
Now for the untrue half....
You can change yourself. You can change your appearance. You can change yourself in any way you want. It's possible. People have said "You've changed". This isn't just a new shirt. Maybe your attitude might change about a certain subject, from experiences.
So, the question is true and not true.

What a well posed question.

I think that there are so many facets to 'who' we are, that we don't change but show another side of ourselves under different circumstances

I read once that if you can change the way you write your signature, you can actually change your personality. I can't remember what the art of analyzing handwriting is, but there is so much truth to it. For example, if you write your name very messily, to the point of illegibility, you don't like yourself and are very self critical. If you write your first name clear but your last name very illigible, wherever you recieved that name from (husband or father) that person you do not like. If you concentrate on writing your signature more clearly, your personality will be one of self care. Try it.

the funny thing is that if you change your life you actually changed yourself..don't you see that? .that how it works for majority of seekers. The true art when you are able change yourself, then life will be changed accordingly, and miraculously. That is already magic teaching.

I disagree. You are a combination of what you do, love, think, say... If you change one, some or all of these, you have not only changed your life, you have changed yourself.

I am surprised at the limited insight some people have to them selves...to change your LIFE you must first change yourself,...How by changing your..... THINKING ....its what you think is what you are ........look around you ..........what you see is the result of what you have been thinking ................you are the sum of all your thoughts .....Go Think about it .

example ....if you THINK you will be retarded in your ways, then you will be .

As people grow and mature (hopefully) they change. Change is constant and inevitable. You can work hard to change how you react to things, frame of mind, and attitude.
