Count of Montecristo by Alexander Dumas. Its about a young French sailor who was unjustly imprisoned for 14 years before he escapes and ultimately takes revenge on his enemies. The author did a great job describing the emotions of the prisoner.Disbelief, denial, self pity, madness, apathy and finally hope.

Have you tried Wilkie Collins? 'The Moonstone' and 'The Woman and White' are both very enjoyable.
Another suggestion: 'The Quincunx' by Charles Palliser was written within the last 20 years but is very much in the tradition of Dickens and Collins.

Nedda by Giovanni Verga, if you like Dickens I think you can appreciate this story that is defined 'bozzetto siciliano'. But Verga is an Italian author...if you prefer an American one I can suggest you to read 'Death of a salesman' by Arthur Miller. I think it can be considered a classic book. If you want a novel I can suggest 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Bronte. I hope my advice will be useful for you.

it doesn't sound like you are into stephen king type novels, but his books are excellent....you could also try the shawshank redemption, which is a very very good short story by stephen king that isn't scary. and you would probably like nicholas sparks....he's a current author, but writes in a very nice style (the notebook is one of his books). hope this helps! :)
