A great question that goes at the heart of government hypocrisy

I've always felt that this was due to the 1st amendment, that pornography is protected by freedom of expression. Paying a prostitute is not a form of expression. However, technically, prostitution is coverd by our declaration of independence, which states that all citizens have the right to the pursuit of happiness (though not actually being happy!)

I suppose it goes into our nationally conservative mindset and those damn Norman Rockwell paintings - you see people gathered around wholesome activities, not lighting up a bong or visiting a whore house.

The government will likely say that prostitution is a public health issue, that prostitutes carry diseases etc and risk spreading them to the public. I agree that legalization and testing is a far better treatment of the problem than ignoring it and prosecuting these women. After all, it's not like they want to be prostitutes. Most girls when they grow up don't say they want to sell their soul for money. Furthermore, what costs more, testing and regulating the prostitution industry, or prosecuting and incarcerating the offenders?

There is NO FEDERAL LAW, stopping prostitution. In Nevada, the US government owns a interest in a whore house. The man that owns it has a VA loan on the business. Prostitution is a good thing it works great in many countries like Holland. The government does not allow pornography, the constitution does. I remember when when it was illegal in this country. The government was sued and lost in 1958. The supreme court said porn was legal.

Pornography is allowed, most places, under the Freedom of Speech statute. Prostitution is considered an occupation involving sex and most areas ban that practice. It's actually up to the State and local governments. Prostitution is legal in areas of Nevada and they are tested and have to meet requirements but most other places it's not. There are also places in America that Pornography is illegal also. It just depends on where you are at and the Governments involved.

Because pornography can be monitored and taxed. Where as it would be much harder for prostitution. It all comes down to the money. Not morals, not STDs...just money.

Plus, there is no whole state that allows prostitution. Just certain counties within states.

some differences I can think of are:

1) people can spread disease with prostitution
2) allowing legal prostitution makes it easier for people to smuggle sex slaves.

It is legal in Las Vegas. If you mean like video porn like playboy TV, then I kinda see your point. I was thinking more like magazines.
