What does it mean to exist? Do they have to breath air and run and poop and live and die to have existed? They exist in stories and legends and in all of our imaginations. Is that any less real?

As long as we can all still think and feel and dream, they will always be around.

There are various opinions about that.
As you have been told by a previous answerer, most legends are based in facts, so it is possible that these mythical persons were the product of a genetic mutation (see the link, it is impressing,it shows an one eyed kitten. Why cyclopes were not the product of a genetic mutation, like this one?)or simply were stories of how something came into being, a way to explain what was happening around them for simple people of that era.
It could be different to explain the belief on centaurus than in vampires, according to the era and the cultural level of people.

In some cases, religion has contributed to the establishment of these beliefs and there are still now movements that are contributing to the maintenance of these beliefs.
Even if it is mostly interesting to examine why this happens, it is not the point in your question.
Here is an informative link on the various mythologies that have been developed.

Some time ago, I have posted a similar question in another category (philosophy).

Yes. I shall always believe in the possibilty of them no matter what, and when I see proof then I know for sure. But, I'll never say they don't (never did/ never will) exist, because I believe they do. Anyways, how do you know that you exist? It could all be a story that someone in some other "world" came up with and humans are the mythic creatures that aren't true.
Here's a list of what I believe still exists today:
vampires, werewolves, ghosts, angels, demons, fallen angels, nature spirits, god/goddess, fae, merpeople, shape-shifters, extraterrestrials, the list goes on...

I like to think that some form of them, though probably not the storybook description, existed. They would've been hunted to extinction out of human fear, though.

Unicorns, mermaids, centaurs, possibly existed, but vampires and werewolves I'm not so keen on. I think those two were just made up to make Vlad the Impaler and wolf attacks more terrifying to the people.

I think that these legends and sightings are much too common and cross cultural lines to be completely baseless. I believe there are many things in this world that we are not meant to understand and I try to keep an open mind.

absolutely. i think most of them now reside in the land of the Fae, but i don't see what stops them from being able to cross over. especially on days like the solstices or equinoxes when the veil is thin.
