It has to been born way back in Prehistoric times, Men are looking for a good mate, to pass on their genes, to increase the tribe and ensure survival.
Women, also look for a mate, who will provide for them and their off spring. You have a better chance of survival, if the man is a good hunter.
Some man, may be good looking, but if he can't bring home the bacon, then you and your child, don't stand much of a chance at survival.
I don't think too much has changed in all those years, men and women, still have the same basic priorities.

Blame Darwin,

Like men went out and hunted, they delvoped there senses as hearing, touch, vision etc.

While women stayed in the cave talking with other females.

So over time woman went for good talkers while men went for things that excited the senses.

But nowdays his is a load of b*llocks because women has much as men well check out a partener by looking how good they are before they do anything else.
