It's a playoff superstition. They call them playoff beards and the players don't shave until their team has either been eliminated from the playoffs or they capture the Stanley Cup.

Superstition ... it is a jinx to shave while in the Playoffs ... the Playoffs start in late April/early May and last through late June/early July ... so these men get two months of beard growth. It is also said that some of these men don't wash their socks either (ewwww).

It's a playoff superstition, and it's not just the players it's the fans too. My brother won't shave his until every Canadian team is out and I know a girl at work who won't shave her legs until Toronto is out. (She didn't have to worry this year, sadly).
