Try contacting your Rural Electric Cooperative to see if they offer any kind of special deal on satellite internet. Our local co-op contracted with a competitor of Hughes and has saved us tons of money. My dish was 1/3 of what Hughes would have charged and my monthly bill is 1/2 of Hughesnet.

Satellite isn't the best there is, but I know what it's like to be stuck in the country on dial up (bang head on keyboard repeatedly). ANYTHING beats dial-up.

Good luck!

BTW, to those of you who live in the city and think fiber optics are everywhere, the phone lines in my area (and many other rural areas of the country) are copper...have been since they ran telephones out here in the 1930's. There aren't enough residents out here to justify a phone company replacing them with fiber optics, so we don't get DSL. Some of us don't even get cable TV, let alone digital cable. Might as well be in Antarctica. Hell, they probably have DSL!

I too suffered from the slow dial up and was not able to get DSL and did not want cable because of the monopoly thing they have going on. But any way I now have WILD BLUE satellite and it is great. 49.99 a month for 512 kbs downloads and 100 kbs uploads. Go to alaweb.com and click on their wild blue page. I like it. The only problem is when it rains and i really don't need to be on it then because of lightning.

I would go with DSL connection.. It is almost as fast a Cable, but is most likely available in your area. Try some new providers, most of the time can get set up with 3 months free.

I'm in the same situation...cable & DSL aren't available, so I use satellite--it's a little pricey, but it's worth it.
