Hands down, natural gas is beter than electric in almost every way, it heats faster, cleaner(yes, gas is actualy cleaner than electric) and is far more reliable and safe than electric. my brother lives in a tiny apartment with baseboard heat and pays more to heat than we do in our 4 bedroom 2 story house.
if you look at the work it takes to set up electricity, and the plants themselves, gas is far cleaner. friends of mine simply drilled a well(punxatwany PA) and ran a pipe into their camp and whamo! free heat and refridgeration( gas fridge)

I really don't know about NJ, but here in up state New York , electric is more expensive. My daughter had electric base board heat, and her first bill, when she really had to use it was over $500.00 for just one month. She moved out of that place fast. The down stairs place had a bill of over $1,000.00 for their first month.
Now our house has gas heat and an electric stove, and before they raised the price of any kind of heating, our highest bill for the winter months was about $301.00.
Now I know every state runs differently, but that is what ours ran. Plus, it all depends on what you keep your heat at. We kept ours at about 68 degrees. If it got colder, we might turn it up a little, other wise we would put on something warmer or I would wrap in a blanket, sitting in my chair.
I hope this helps you out a little. Good luck with the heat.

i live just across the border in p.a. and the cost of gas per electric is a no brainer--gas is way cheaper!!! if a unit if electric was the same a gas, elec. would cost 4.00 a gallon instead of 1.79 a gallon for gas
