It depends on how long you plan on staying in CA. I would advise that you bring a pair of blue jeans and 2-3 light tops - that would make an outfit for 3 days. You need one dress just in case you decide on fine dining. Bring a couple of shorts that would match the same 3 tops. Don't forget a bathing suit.

When you pack, roll each garment (size of a summer sausage). You will find that 1 overnight bag will fit everything and you may not even have to check-in your luggage.

At all times, if you decide to check-in your luggage, make sure you have with you (carry-on) 1 pair of undies, 1 light top, toothbrush, basic toiletries. This is in case your luggage gets lost and does not make it to CA until the following day.

how long are you going and what part? (Northern, southern, or central?) If it is northern, bring lots of light clothing, but a couple pants, and a sweater at night. Some nights are nice, and others are still a little chilly. Southern, if you forget your sweater don't worry about it. It's HOT as he--, even at night. I usually take +2 outfits per day, so if I'm gone 3 days I'll take 5 so if the clothes get soiled or if I don't feel like wearing something that I thought I'd like, when I packed, I'll have extras.

P.S. The coast is cooler then inland. for example: Palm Springs is hotter then san diago, or north bay is hotter then san fransico. All the beaches have nice breezes

I take a shirt for each day, one pair of pants for every two shirts (Maybe that's why they are call pairs) and specialty stuff, bathing suit, socks, underwear, a belt.

Ask someone you will visit if you need clothes for a cool evening or check on weather.yahoo.com to see the forecast. Pack according to what you expect weather-wise.

If you will be there long enough to do laundry, you can take less and wash there.

Depends on how long you will be there and what location in California. LA is a lot hotter than South Lake Tahoe!

I don't know about northern California, but I know that clothing is optional in southern California.

if you are staying for a week, then take enough clothes for all 7 days. if you are staying for longer then a week, then still take only 7 days worth of clothes and plan on doing a load of laundry while you are there =)
