So you can plug something in on the inside. You'd be hard pressed to do so otherwise.

I'll tell you one of several possible reasons... have you seen those 7 in1 or 13 in 1 card readers? the kind that goes installed as if it was a floppy disk drive? they, by nature go connected to a USB port, so in order for it not to have a cable coming from the inside of the PC just to be connected to a "normal" USB port, it goes connected to an internal USB so all the wiring would be internal.

I had a power surge on my phone line coming into the modem on my laptop, even though the device manager show that the modem is OK it will not work at getting me on the internet. I can put in another modem, but I don't think you can add more usb ports. I've seen laptop cooler fans that would blow air on the bottom of the laptop and would plug into usb and expand your system to 2 more usb ports, but it required you to have 2 working usb ports to work. Sorry. good luck...

The internal port is mainly used to connect ports that would be on the front of your computer. The are some internal devices that would hook up to the inthernal port. These are mainly devices like card readers, photo scanners, and rarely drives.
