My original question wasn't defined well enough.
I meant to ask how many baseballs does Major League Baseball use a season, inclusive of home runs, foul balls, balls taken out of play, etc?

Zim calculated how many balls would be used in 162 games. But there are more than 162 total games played in a major league season.

There are 2430 games played in one major league season. Using Zim's other calculation, 45 balls used on average per game would amount to 109,350 total balls used in one season by the MLB.

To add some extra fun, if you take the cost of an official major league baseball, which is around $9, and multiply it by 109,350 baseballs, you get $984,150 spent by the MLB each season on baseballs alone. However, it's almost certain that the MLB receives a significant discount on each ball. I would guess they pay around $3-5 per baseball. But even if they pay the full $9 per ball, $984,150 is pocket change for the MLB. The average major league player makes more than twice that amount.

every major league game begins with six dozen balls. the average life of a ball is six pitches. Since most major league games average between 250 and 300 pitches, that would put the ball count at about 40 or 50 balls used per game. so 162 games a season multiplied by 45 (avg balls in one game) comes out to be .................................................................................................................................about 7,290 balls a season
