First and most important, get a lawyer. If your sister in law is spreading slanderous rumors, she can be charged for this and should be advised that she will be held accountable. Your brother should have absolutely no contact with his sister in law until this is over. He also might take a lie detector test. These are not admissible in a court of law, but the D.A. and police will take it into account.

You really need to talk about this to a lawyer so that they can give you more and better advice than you're going to find on this forum. Best of luck.

If the police followed the law, he should have been advised of his rights to 1. remain silent and not say anything incriminating, and 2. A right to have an attorney. If he cannot afford one, a public defender can be appointed without any cost to him. If the police violated the law, the attorney can bring this out during a trial. Also, if he was mistreated, someone should report this to the Internal Affairs Office of the Police Department. They will investigate complaints against the Police. Unfortunately, this sounds like his word against theirs - but if he was injured, medical records will support his alligations.
