To get rid of crabgrass it helps to know its life cycle. When spring soil temps (at a depth of 2"-3") reach 55-60 degrees Fahrenheit, the first crabgrass (also spelled "crab grass") seed will germinate. From mid-summer to fall, crabgrass produces seed. The crabgrass plants (but not the seeds) are killed by frosts in autumn.
Preemergent herbicides (also spelled "pre-emergent") come in either granular or liquid form and kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate.
Think of preemergent herbicides as forming an invisible shield across the soil surface that stops emerging crabgrass dead in its tracks. This shield image will serve as a reminder not to practice core aeration on lawns after applying preemergent herbicides, since doing so would only "puncture" the shield. Aerate lawns beforehand, instead.

Easy... Ortho makes a great spray product that kills only crabgrass. Read the directions and it will work. If the area you have is large in square feet, then the best way is to wait until next spring and apply pre-emergent granules with your spreader. Scott's makes such a product. It is applied at the time the (yellow) forsythia begin to bloom. That product prevents the crabgrass from reseeding and growing next year (it actually dies each winter, but drops seeds for the following season).

well depending on where you live try to find any local farmers cooperative (grain elevator) and ask them about a product called 2-4D lv6 it is a broad leaf weed killer it will not harm grass if mixed properly and is very effective on lawns will also take care of dandilions farmers use this on their pastures to kill thistles
WORD OF CAUTION!!!! this product will kill any broad leaf do not use on gardens or flower beds it will kill any flower that is not a grass flower broad leaf examples are beans hostas and any large leaf plant
