Don't say that in the Seattle area. Most of the women at the ballroom dances are in their 20's and 30's. That is if you consider middle age the 50's.

That's not true. Maybe that's the way it is in your area, but there are other parts of the country where there are a lot of young people involved in ballroom dancing. I am in the Inland Empire (Riverside and San Bernardino County, CA) and there are a lot of young people who attend the dances. I think it's primarily because we have one of the best studios/trainers around. Buddy Schwimmer of 5-6-7-8 Studio in Redlands.
If you want to know about the Schwimmers, just watch "So You Think You Can Dance". Benji Schwimmer is Buddy and Laurie's son and Heidi Groskreutz is Benji's cousin. Both Benji and Heidi are currently on this show. Watch them perform and that will give you an idea of the level of dancing our young people are doing here in the Inland Empire.

Is that a fact? Well, if so, I can imagine as a middle - aged woman that a reason I would go to a ballroom dancing place (whatever that is) would be b/c it would be a way to get exercise, socialize and have fun in a safe, pleasant atmosphere.

The children have left home, so they have the time to have a social life again and do what they enjoy, in this case dancing. Probably they danced when they were young before having a family happened. And now, it is difficult to get male partners to dance with. Possibly they are widowed or divorced, and this is a chance of a social life. Don't be too harsh in judging them.
Incidentally, dancing is recognised as one of the best forms of activity as you get older. It exercises the brain and body and thus is an excellent combination for ongoing mental and physical health, plus providing an excellent social life and great enjoyment.

They are either there to prepare for a wedding or as a great form of excercise. I don't know where you are dancing, but the few places I've gone in Chicago have been filled with people of both sexes and mostly senior citizens. My partner and I are 20 and 21, so we are always the youngest in the crowd.

Because the younger ones aren't into ballroom dancing but it is catching on in popularity so you'll see more out there.

It's the kind of music they like, and they enjoy dancing
such things as the waltz, tango, mambo, rhumba, etc.
Younger folk like that loud rap and loud rock stuff, so
they don't frequent ballrooms as they won't find that kind
of music there. One thing both the old and young enjoy
tho, is "line dancing" and "country" music.
