I went to school with a guy who was cousins to james taylor's wife after CARLY SIMON (not carole king)...he said the song was directed to james taylor. That's the story as i know it.

It was Carly Simon and she never publically said. She did however sell the "secret" a few years ago for major bucks at some kind of celebrity auction. So supposedly only her and the person who bought the "secret" know

I must correct you first. The song you are referring to is not by
Carole King. It is called "Your So Vain" and was written by
Carly Simon.
She has never revealed who it was about, by mutual agreement
with the person she wrote it for. However, some say that it was
most likely written about her ex-husband James Taylor.
It's quite possible...
