There are two reasons why a calculator is fast. First, it uses a different system of time than a human. There is a chip on the calculator that acts as a clock. The clock controls the process of the calculator. In the time it takes a person to count to ten, a calculator's clock has already counted to millions. While you are writing down the letters on paper, the calculator has finished with the answer.
The second reason why a calculator is faster is that it uses a different kind of number system (binary) than a human. Our usual 10 = 1010 in binary. A person writes 10x10=100 but a calculator writes :
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
+1010
=1100100
Then it changes 1100100 into the numbers we use, and prints out 100.
Binary looks complicated but it is actually so simple, a machine can do it. It just has a lot of steps. But a machine's steps are done according to the machine's clock which is much faster than our clock! So the machine is faster than we are.
