Hummel figurines - which many people thought they would sell to finance their retirement - are now nearly worthless due to the huge amount of them offered on eBay. Same goes for many other collectible items. What do you think?

Mass produced collectibles were never worth the claimed value increases that were promised when they were new. Without e-bay, it would have been too hard to find buyers. The new collectibles being sold today also do not have a high future value.
Ebay is cool because it helps recycle things to new owners, some of which would have been landfill, even though perfectly good, just for lack of someone who liked the item.

I don't know about hummels per say but I don't think eBay has devalued stuff but just the opposite. I notice now that if you go junk shopping in pawn shops or second hand stores, they're prices are dictated by what the market on eBay is at the time. They will even get online in front of you to show you the going price on an item.

Actually lots of items posted on eBay are new or from stores now. It is just another way to sell and buy. I think it is a fair game, the bidding price reflects the relationship of supply and demand. The devaluation of the items is just a result of depreciation in the whole market. You don't expect to gain a lot of money for selling a used item, unless it is antique. You will appreciate there's an easier way to get rid of your useless stuffs or sell your collectible items to someone who loves it. Or, you will sell it in your garage sale even cheaper.

I think it's pretty great. Most of the time it doesn't really "devalue" stuff, because it's not like you'd be able to sell that item elsewhere for more. Generally, you get the best price you could get for your item on Ebay, you just might not get back what you paid for it.

well, when you get right down to it, they are only things. If ebay teaches people not to be so focussed on THINGS and what they are worth (or not worth, or no longer worth!), I think that is okay. If people just get upset, well that's their problem.

I think it's pretty cool. You can buy stuff at low (and high) prices.
