I was arrested and there are circimstances that lead me to believe that the officers thought I was someonelse.

OK, so first things first: Have you hired a defense attorney?
Do you have an alibi for the time when the crime was being committed? Were you in possession of any stolen goods? Did you motive and opportunity? Many questions, but the upshot is, get a good attorney and all will come out right (assuming you really didn't commit the crime).

Taking the identity of another is a crime that is growing nationwide. Usually the criminal takes your id and uses it for monetary gain. Occassionally, however, they actually succeed with the police and it becomes their a.k.a. If you are arrested for charges your "alias" comitteed it will generally show that it wasn't you when they compare the fingerprints. If it shows up as your are being compromised you should visit the department of your local police that specialize in identity theft.
You think that's bad, think about the girl whose twin sister had used her name in numerous crimes. Now that was a mess.

Proove to them that you did not do it by witnesses and evidence that you were not where they thought you were at the time of the crime.
Get a good lawyer.
