Well, they are both different type of writing.
Creative writing consists of more thinking "outside the box" using ideas.. and of that nature..
Journalism- is also different--- writing news stories and of that sort..
Depending on what kind of writer you are- decide what type of writing skill you want to develop.
I would choose creative writing as a starting point though---
and then do journalism if you had the option of doing both.

I'll preface this by saying that I've never taken either creative writing or journalism courses. I'd guess that rigorous journalism courses would make you a more disciplined writer than would creative writing classes. But both those majors teach a skill. If you plan to write, you should have KNOWLEDGE to go along with the skill. So, I'd recommend that you major in something substantial--one of the sciences, economics, or maybe history and, if you want take some journalism courses as electives.

You should choose a broad field English degree with a Writing emphasis and then minor in Journalism.

With broad field English, you'll be able to take Creative Writing classes, Technical Writing classes and basically learn every type of writing there is.

Throw in the Journalism minor and you're guaranteed to have all of your bases covered.

I've taken both, and Creative Writing really helped me develop my writing skills more than Journalism did.

Well, that depends on which writing skills you plan to improve. Journalism focuses more on fact-cramming, sounding good, and selling news while creative writing focuses more on being different and selling art.

Yes it depends what type of writing you'd like to do. I have found that in journalism class you write a piece for homework and then two or three leads in a class time.

Journalism. The courses for this are more broad, cover more material, and teach you how to write in more than one genre, whereas creative writing only teaches you how to write in one or two genres (rarely more than that, but there are exceptions to every rule).

Depends...would you like to gain more skills in descriptions and creativity or fact and reporting?
