The were originally named the Cincinatti Red Stockings. They dropped the Stockings from the name.

According to "Baseball and the Obscurity of the Derivation of Team Names" (Oxford Press 1989) The Red Socks took thier name from a rather strange looking local species of racoon. The local community warmed to it's awkward long red tinged legs and it's cheeky nature...curious but true...
